Non-Uniform Offsetting and Hollowing by Using Biarcs Fitting for Rapid Prototyping Processes

چکیده

This chapter presents a new method of Non-Uniform offsetting and using biarc fittings to hollow out solid objects or thick walls to speed up the part building processes on RP systems. By building a hollowed prototype instead of a solid part, material consumption and build time can be reduced significantly. A rapid prototyped part with constant wall thickness is important for many different applications of rapid prototyping. To provide constant wall thickness, an Averaged Surface Normals method is developed to find the correct normals to offset the vertices of the STL models. Detailed algorithms are presented to eliminate self-intersections, loops and irregularities of offsetting contours.

Hollowing STL Objects with Biarcs Fitting to Improve Efficiency and Accuracy of Rapid Prototyping Processes

This paper presents non-uniform offsetting and biarcs fitting methods to speed up the part building process and increase the accuracy of built part for Rapid Prototyping (RP) processes. The non-uniform offsetting method is developed to build a hollowed object by finding correct offset contours of the Stereolithography (STL) models. Building a hollowed object instead of a solid part can signific...

Uniform offsetting of polygonal model based on Layered Depth-Normal Images

Uniform offsetting is an important geometric operation for computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) applications such as rapid prototyping, NC machining, coordinate measuring machines, robot collision avoidance, and Hausdorff error calculation. We present a novel method for offsetting (grown and shrunk) a solid model by an arbitrary distance r. First, offset polygons are directly compu...

A Heuristic Offsetting Scheme for Catmull-Clark Subdivision Surfaces

In rapid prototyping, a hollowed prototype is preferred and significantly reduces the building time and material consumption in contrast to a solid model. Most rapid prototyping obtains solid thin shell by gradually adding or solidifying materials layer by layer. This is a non-trivial problem to offset a solid which involves finding all selfintersections and filling gaps after raw offsetting. W...

Non-uniform Offsetting and its Applications in Laser Path Planning of Stereolithography Machine

Laser path planning is an important step in solid freeform fabrication processes such as Stereolithography (SLA). An important consideration in the laser path planning is to compensate the shape of laser beam. Currently the compensation is divided into two steps, Z-compensation and X-Y compensation, and the shape of laser beam is assumed to be uniform for the whole platform. In this research, w...

The use of 3D printing technology in human defect reconstruction-a review of cases study

In this paper, we report the benefit of Computer Tomography (CT), reverse engineering (RE) and rapid prototyping (RP) in individual implant production for maxillofacial surgery. The design and fabrication processes includes: a) processing medical image data of a patient’s pathologically defective area having a symmetrical part to construct a three-dimensional (3D) digital model; b) forming an i...
